Which Upcoming Movies Are You Stoked For?

So we’ve done the TV news, what about the movies? There are about a billion new and awesome things coming out, but how can you separate what you should be looking forward to… and what maybe you should take a pass on.
Marvel let loose a few movie rumors at Comic-Con, not including the ones they confirmed. Someone (Kevin Feige) dropped something no one really expected… or wanted, by announcing they were going to try and make yet another Punisher movie. For the first time in the history of ever its Punisher fans saying, “Please, no more Frank Castle!” instead of his enemies. We’ve learned that the curb-stomping balls-to-the-walls Anti-Hero does not translate well to film, but Marvel wants to try again. Well… okay, I’ll bite and wait for more information on that one, but I can’t even make myself be cautiously optimistic on this one. And “Cautiously Optimistic” is my middle name.

On the brighter side of Marvel movies, I have one word: Deadpool. They’ve got the writers of Zombieland working on the script, Ryan Reynolds as the lead role and have proposed the script to Robert Rodriguez to direct. Sadly he’s busy with… Spy Kids 4 right now (Really? Really? You turned down Deadpool for Spy Kids 4? Either that franchise is paying you a lot or the script is not all it’s cracked up to be) but I choose to believe this movie will be awesome. It’s been revealed Deadpool will be breaking the fourth wall, and the movie will be a total reboot of the character from the… I hate to use the words “dismal failure” for his appearance in the Wolverine movie… but I’ll use them anyway. As a long time Deadpool fan I am sincerely looking forward to this movie with the very highest of hopes. Which I’m hoping doesn’t mean I’ll be crushingly disappointed.

But on to movies that we’ll actually be seeing come 2011.
Speaking of Ryan Reynolds, the Green Lantern movie is sure picking up some steam since Comic-Con. The posters look pretty cool thus far, and since the costume’s actual appearance hasn’t been released yet, I’m setting this movie in the “cautiously optimistic” file with the others. We’ll wait for the trailer though.

Speaking of cool trailers, anyone seen the five minute trailer for Thor yet? Because I have and holy crap. All the doubts that have been building up in my mind have been (at least temporarily) suppressed by the pure awesome that Comic-Con delivered unto us. I’m actually really looking forward to this movie now, which is a nice change because ever since I saw the costumes my opinions were pretty much in the crapper for this movie. I feel much better now.

Speaking of movies I know nothing about (Okay, a stretch this time I know) since when was Sucker Punch getting done? Am I the only one who completely missed the boat and had absolutely no idea this was coming out? Well, there’s the new Zack Snyder movie coming out, and from the trailer and the promotional material it looks like it’s going to be a pretty wild ride. Seems to take place somewhere between a 50’s insane asylum and a weird dream world. From the trailer I’ve gathered this much: Samurai, girls with guns, dragon, mecha and a lot of heavy action moments. Now, I’m not saying this will be the new intellectual sci-fi movie everyone has been waiting for… but I think it looks like fun. So as an advocator of fun, I think I’ll see it. Be sure to check out the trailer on youtube.

Since there are, as previously stated, about a billion movies coming out soon I’ll just list one more that will be coming out this October called Let Me In. This flick is based on a Swedish book which translates to Let the Right One In, and it was pretty much a fantastic piece of creepy-as-hell which tells the story of a human kid who meets a vampire-kid. An the obsessive, whacked-out relationship that follows, which makes Twilight and maybe even True Blood look like child’s play. The Swedish movie was also full of some good old fashioned “Yikes”. Now, a lot of fans have been expressing concern about an American remake of an already really good movie, which I don’t blame them for, but a lot of early previews of the film have had reviewers giving it a thumbs up. So, with my fellow bloggers and other fans already seeming optimistic about it from what they saw at Comic-Con, I see no reason not to get a little excited either. So I hope that the new film is good, but if you want a healthy dose of creeped-out, do yourself a favor and go rent the Swedish Let the Right One In. You’ll be… well, in this case probably really uncomfortably surprised by how good it is.

Speaking of Swedish remakes, here’s another case of “it ain’t broke but it’s got subtitles so we’re gonna ‘fix’ it in English”, Daniel Craig has been cast as lead in the English language remake of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. Still no word on who plays the wickedly smart and damaged hacker, Lisbeth. I am sure they’ll pump out an adequate remake of this great movie, but do yourself a favour. Go see the original. And if you still have the appetite, go see the remake and let me know how it compares.
