Hey SPACE friends!
At the most-excellent HAL-CON a few weeks back, Ajay & I were honoured to take part in the epic ‘Geeks vs Nerds’ debate. For those of you who aren’t familiar with GvN, they’re a wicked-cool subset of the very active Halifax genre community – check ‘em out here. They’re awesome.
The topic/question for the epic GvN debate at HAL-CON 2011 was “Who’s the better teacher: Albus Dumbledore vs. Yoda?”
We were assigned the “pro-Dumbledore” side. Sadly, we lost (those east coasters are VICIOUS debaters!). But I like to think we fought like heroes. For our opening salvo I performed a full-on rap that Ajay & I wrote on the plane-ride out there. I’ve had a few InnerSPACE viewers ask me to post the lyrics, so here they are, along with a few pics (one of Ajay, myself and our intrepid teammate Patrick; and one me onstage in rapping glory).
Thanks to all of you who cheered for us, but, truth be told, the better team won. But we’ll be back, Halifax…..
Fresh Prince, look-out!:
It’s great to be back at geeks vs. nerds
No lightsabers here, our only weapons are words
So let’s dive right in, this debate could get dodgy
Yoda vs. Dumbledore in terms of pedagogy
To argue Yoda’s the better teacher is insane
Regardless of the midi-chlorians in his veins
Who could even understand his advice?
Cryptic, unrealistic (and I’m putting it nice)
Like when Anakin was questioning the Jedi way
Pregnant Padme on her death-bed, she could die any day
Between the dark-side & the light Anakin had to choose
And Yoda’s advice? “Let go of everything you fear to lose”?!
THAT’S what he says with stakes too high too miss?!
No wonder Anakin turned to Darth Sidious
Now because he’s so small I see a lot of Yoda in myself
But in Harry Potter, Yoda’s at-best a House Elf
You think these geeks are gonna harm me?
Wait ‘till they get a taste of Dumbledore’s army
Yeah, we’re cocky, cuz we know we’re gonna own ‘em
Dumbledore’s the better teacher, Expecto Patronum!
