One of my greatest regrets as a movie lover was never seeing The Fellowship of the Ring while it was in theatres.  I discovered it not long after it came out on DVD and was immediately obsessed, so obviously I went to see Two Towers and Return of the King several times each... When the Great Digital Film Festival rolled into town last year I noticed that they were playing all three Lord of the Rings films. I couldn't let such a golden oppurtunity go to waste. Let me tell you this: it was more than worth the affordable price of admission.

That's the awesome thing about the Great Digital Film Festival. They choose a broad selection of well loved, older films and bring them back to the big screen with digital projection.  Most of the films are fantasy/sci-fi or horror, but they also choose the occasional comedy or drama (this year's fest features Airplane! and Scarface, both decidedly not "nerdy" films as such - but no less awesome).

Last year's Digital Film Festival took place in 6 cities, covering 4 provinces but this year they've gotten a mega upgrade - 13 cities and 6 provinces! Here's hoping it only continues to grow.  I'm calling on Cineplex to spread the film love to all ten Provinces next year... maybe they can even get the Territories in on the action!

For this year if you live in Calgary, Edmonton, Langley, Vancouver, Winnipeg, Saskatoon, Ottawa, Toronto, Vaughn, Hamilton, London, Montreal or Kirkland get planning!  The festival starts tomorrow - Friday, February 3rd and runs until February 9th.  Each film has a few screenings to choose from so that everyone has a chance to fit their favourite films to their schedule.

If you live in Toronto, be sure to come to the downtown location because Ajay Fry, Teddy Wilson and Cynthia Loyst will be hosting a few of the screenings! Ajay also wrote an article for Metro about some of the films he's most looking forward to. You can read it right here!
