Baltar finds himself questioning his sanity after he sees Number Six apparently interacting with Galactica’s crew, and is then stunned when she openly accuses him of being a traitor.
Gauis Baltar is accused of treason, by none other than Number Six (posing as someone named Shelly Godfrey). As the Galactica crew investigates the matter, Baltar is left to ponder his fate… and his own place in the world.
Another day, another argument between Gauis Baltar and Number Six. He wants to have sex, she wants to talk about God. Despite everything that’s happened, part of him – a big part of him – still looks upon her as mirage, certainly not someone to verse him in the mysteries of the universe. He is pulled out of his fantasy by a call to CIC.
What is it this time? When he walks in, Six is already in CIC…Talking to COMMANDER ADAMA? Everyone can see her! Baltar feels himself coming unmoored, when the hammer falls: Six (calling herself Shelly Godfrey) has called Baltar out as a traitor and tells Adama and everyone else that he’s ‘the man responsible for the (Cylon) holocaust.’
The accusation is a stunner, no t least of all to Baltar, who is so flabbergasted he barely hears the second part; that Shelly/Six has proof of his treason: A security camera disk showing someone entering the Caprica Defense mainframe without permission a few days before the Cylon attacks. While the face of said person is blurred, Shelly insists that when cleared, it will reveal Dr. Baltar as the traitor.
Despite his skepticism, Adama must take the accusations seriously. Gaeta, once Baltar’s faithful aide, is in charge of sharpening the image on the disk, but in the meantime, Baltar’s security clearances are revoked and his work on the Cylon detector halted. Still, Adama questions Shelly’s story, especially as most of it was passed down to her by the late Dr. Amarack (she claims she was his mistress). Of course, we know that Amarack did, in fact have knowledge of Baltar’s duplicity, knowledge that perished with Amarack on the Olympic Carrier. Yet during a one-on-one meeting with Shelly where Adama begins to punch holes in her story, Shelly starts to act more like the Six we know, subtly seducing Adama, like she has so many other humans (including Baltar). It almost works but Adama manages to steer clear of her charms...this time.
President Laura Roslin doesn’t believe the claims either, especially considering Dr. Baltar’s role in her rebuilding plan. But Baltar’s guilt or innocence runs a distant second to Laura’s concerns about her cancer. It is becoming more and more physically debilitating and while on the phone with Baltar, the President collapses. Her assistant, BILLY, passes it off to the press as the flu, but keeping Laura’s cancer secret is becoming increasingly difficult.
Meanwhile, Kara Thrace continues her rehab from the injuries she sustained on the Red Planet in Episode 5. She is not used to being kept out of the action, so needless to say, she’s antsy. She finally finds a sense of purpose when Lee Adama volunteers her to help analyze the Cylon Raider that she captured and flew back to Galactica. Lee not only knows the Raider could be very useful to them in the future, but also that the job could boost Kara’s morale.
On CAPRICA, we find Sharon has rejoined Helo. Sharon’s ‘abduction’ at the hands of the Cylons has only brought she and Helo closer together and he finally reveals his true feelings for her, feelings he’s harbored since before the Cylon attacks. Of course, unbeknownst to him, this plays right into the larger Cylon plan…further sealed when Sharon kisses him.
The other ‘Sharon’, the one back on Galactica, continues to struggle with the fact that she may be a Cylon. Someone has written the word Cylon all over the inside of her locker door…and she suspects that someone is her.
As for Baltar, he tries to reason with Shelly/Six, but she won’t have any of it. She’s out to crucify him. Baltar even begins to believe that Shelly and Six are, in fact, different people. He decides to take matters into his own hands, breaking into the Lab to see that Gaeta has clarified the photo and that it reveals… BALTAR!!! Clear as day. A shocked Baltar barely notices that he’s set off a security alarm and when Adama and guards break down the lab door, they catch the good doctor red- handed. He is promptly taken to the brig.
Baltar is terrified, left to ponder his fate. Alone in his cell, he begs God to take mercy upon him and his many sins, swearing that if only he could be saved he would devote his entire life to being God’s one true servant. At that moment Six appears. She holds him close and reassures him that all will be well, all is as God wants it to be. Then another surprise, as Gaeta shows up and informs Baltar that he discovered the photo was a fake.
The Cylons were trying to discredit Baltar because he was working on the Cylon detector and they didn’t want him or his work to succeed. Baltar is released to find that ‘Shelly Godfrey’ has vanished without a trace and a fleet-wide manhunt is underway.
