Crackdown

Action / Online

What do you do when your city has been overrun with crime? When decent people can't cross the street without walking into a gang fight and bosses make whole blocks of the city into their own personal playground? You CRACKDOWN on crime. That's what you do. And that is exactly what you will be doing in this open world sandbox game from Microsoft and Realtime Worlds. You take control of an Agent from the Agency. Your mission is to shoot, kick, punch, jump on, drive over or blow up the bad guys, and if some innocent civilians get mashed along the way, well they were at best a nuisance.
FULL REVIEW
If video games had parents, then this game would be the child of Grand Theft Auto. But this is a child on steroids, literally as your agent will physically grow bigger as you improve his strength. Just one of 5 core abilities that grow and improve your ability to interact with the environment, rewarding you for playing. The explosions are impressive. And absentee landlords have conveniently left many flammable containers strewn along the rooftops to add fuel to the fire. There are hundreds of items all through the streets that can be broken, smashed and used as a shield, or thrown at your enemies. The guns range from simple pistols to homing rockets and reloads are conveniently obtained from captured ammo supply stations, or off dead gang members, whichever is closer.

The targeting system allows a lock on and selection of sub systems to easily select a portion of a target to shoot at. Lock on to a gang members head for a one shot kill, his arm to make him drop his weapon, legs to make him fall down, or torso for the easiest hits. Cars can have their tires hit so they spin out or gas cap hit so they explode.

How would an agent get around town without a cool set of wheels? Fortunately, in Crackdown vehicles are in no short supply. From small mini smart cars to large Scud launchers, there are a variety of transit options. Most citizens are eager to help you in your task of cleaning up the city and will offer you the use of their personal vehicle, with minimal resistance. If you favor something more powerful, then call on the agency garage. There you will find 3 types of vehicles. Each one will change and augment as your driving ability increases. Choose to drive under your enemies with the supercar (with twin machine guns), over your enemies with the SUV (with spring jumping ability) or through your enemies with the Agency Truck Cab (with turbo charging power).

Overall this is a very fun game to play. You really aren't punished for experimenting and dying as your ability scores are saved after death, so your new agent clone can start where the last left off. There are many things to do in the game other than kill gangs. The foot and driving races are fun and building scaling looking for powerups can be very enjoyable.

Crackdown Game Review
Review by: Kim Jong Il
Pros
* Incredible draw distance allows tracking of targets from high rooftops, persistence to game objects means the car you crashed on the highway 20 minutes ago will still be there, probably causing accidents the next time you return.
* Exciting Shooting game, with multiple weapons and strategies available to take out enemies.
* Very fun car racing component, reminiscent of Burnout Revenge.
* For people who love to jump around, this game offers an almost unlimited ability to scale everything in the game.
* Your Agent has 5 abilities that drastically effect how you can play as they increase.
* Open world sandbox model, you choose what you want to do and when.
* Very polished and bug free.
Cons
* The game play isn't revolutionary.
* You can max out your agents skills in around 30 hours of play
* Only 3 difficulty modes, Tough and Ruthless are easily overcome, but Psychotic can be very hard with one shot kills from enemy explosives.
* Graphics are good but not spectacular
Interesting Info
* Best street and foot race times are saved, and you can go online to see how you rank against others on Xbox Live.
* The Shai-Gen Corporation's Boss, the Enigmatic Wang, left me asking; Lo Pan? Mr. David Lo Pan?
* Gamertags of race leaders are displayed around town on billboards.
* Advertising from Dodge on city billboards.
