1-1 Pilot
The show opens up in an open forest where a teenage boy is lying naked. It is our main character, Kyle (Matt Dallas). He talks about his unconventional birth where his first memory was waking up in the forest. He wakes up and looks around and is unsure of what he is seeing. He sees a rattlesnake crouched in front of him. The snake lunges to attack him and he reaches out and grabs it by its neck and it stops hissing. The snake turns around and slithers away. Kyle starts walking away and he says that every species is born with instincts that creates a balance with nature, all except the species he was born into.
Opening Intro.
Kyle is still walking in the forest. He hears the sound of people and sees a tent with two people inside having sex. He peeks into the tent and frightens them.
Kyle is at an intersection in a city. People are honking and staring at him because he is still naked. He looks around, taking everything in. Two police officers approach him and throw a blanket over his front. They ask him who he is. No response so they spin him around and handcuff him.
He is taken to a prison. He is put in the shower and than taken to his cell. He holds up the sign “Juvenile Holding, Washington State, John Doe, 763464” and his photo is taken.
Rock music starts playing as we are shown a house. A mother (Marguerite Macintyre) is walking up the stairs and she calls to her daughter Lori (April Matson), who is still asleep in bed. She calls again and Lori rolls over to see a boy in her bed, Declan (Chris Olivero). They both get up quickly and put their clothes on. Her mother says that she’s slept long enough. She goes to open her door but then the phone rings and she goes to answer. Lori and Declan are relieved because they are not dressed yet. Declan climbs out the window and Lori throws the rest of his stuff behind him.
The mother, Nicole Trager, is on the phone with Lou from the juvenile prison. Lou says that he has someone that he knows that she’ll want to meet. He says that no one knows where he came from but he seems really smart. She says that she’ll stop by tomorrow and he convinces her to come this afternoon.
Lori is in the kitchen where she has a spat with her younger brother, Josh (Jean-Luc Blodeau). She says bite me and he says that that’s Declan’s job Their father comes in and asks “Declan?, what happened to Mike?”. Her brother says that he’s the new flavour of the week. Lori says that he’s just a friend, he’s having a party this week and she asks if she can take the car. The mother walks in and says that she has to go out for a bit to go meet this special case.
Kyle is served a cheeseburger and fries for lunch at the juvenile prison. He sits down next to some guys and they walk away as soon as he sits down. He thinks to himself that the more people he saw, the more alone he felt. He takes a bite out of his muffin. One of the other inmates asks him what he is staring at. He walks over and is stopped by Lou, one of the counsellors, who tells him that Kyle doesn’t understand what he’s talking about. The inmate says that if he doesn’t stop staring at him, he’s going to have to kick his butt. Kyle thinks that this person reminds him of the snake he saw in the forest before it struck.
Kyle is outside and staring up at the chain-link fence. He watches a ball going back and forth. He turns around and the inmate from inside is walking towards him. He then circles around Kyle telling him that he ain’t tough. He puts up his fists and Kyle follows his example. Kyle is distracted by an ache in his stomach and the inmate throws one punch and Kyle goes down. His nose starts to bleed. Lou comes in to break it up and check on Kyle. Kyle thinks that he hardly notices the pain on his face because inside him, something had flipped and he began to feel wonderful. Lou sends the rest of the crowd away and Kyle is left alone sitting on the pavement.
Lou greets Nicole and thanks her for coming while Kyle is drawing with a crayon. Lou says that he is listed as a John Doe right now. Lou says that he reminds him of his brother Kyle. Nicole calls him Kyle and he looks up. Lou says that he doesn’t speak a word but he must know what she’s saying. Lou exit’s the room and Nicole walks over to Kyle who is dabbing quickly with the crayon. He lifted the picture up and he had drawn a picture of the two in the tent. She is shocked. Kyle mimics her facial expression.
Nicole is talking to Lou while Kyle is facing a glass window. Lou says that there was no missing persons report and he was just found on the street. Lou says that there is something she needs to see and he spins Kyle around. He lifts up his shirt and Kyle has no belly button.
Nicole is back at the house and her husband, Stephen Trager (Bruce Thomas) says that they (the children) will never go with this as they are setting the table. She announces that she has a new patient who is going to come live with them. She says that he is a very sweet, special boy. The kids don’t go for the idea but the father steps in and says that the mother wants this so this is going to happen.
Nicole walks Kyle into the house and says that this is home and he will be staying here for a few days. Kyle looks around and sees the pictures on the wall. He thinks that the flat, tiny people must be living in the wall but then he understood that humans grow smaller as they develop and pretty soon he’d be shrinking himself. He walks over to the computer and sees the screen saver on the screen. He says that the images made his mind explode with complex mathematical formula. Nicole asks him if he wants to play a game. She shows him how to use the mouse. The phone rings and Nicole goes and answers it. It’s her husband and he asks her how’d things go and if he is needed there. She says she will be fine. Lori comes downstairs in a towel and is frightened when she sees that it’s Kyle at the computer and runs away. He then learns that humans grow larger instead of smaller and he wonders if he was ever smaller.
Lori confronts her mother and asks why she didn’t tell her that he was in the house, she thinks he saw her boobs. The father is shown still on the line, slightly offended, and he gets up and walks away from his desk and on his television there is a news report about a girl who was washed up on shore with no memory on how she got there.
Nicole has to leave the house and asks Lori to watch him. Lori answers the phone and it is her friend, Hillary. She says that Declan hasn’t called. Kyle is listening intently. She switches to the other line and it’s Declan. Lori gets up and walks away while talking to him on the phone.
Kyle leaves the house because he hears a piano playing from a distance. He thinks that it’s part mathematics, part euphoria. He walks into a neighbours house, the Blooms, and there is a girl playing on the piano (Amanda Bloom). Mrs. Bloom walks into the house behind him, not noticing him. He then realizes that not everyone can appreciate this miracle. He tries to speak but nothing comes out. Amanda around and Kyle is frightened as he stumbles backwards and runs out of the house.
Kyle is lying in a bath tub where his heart is pounding. The son runs into the bathroom and sits on the toilet and he starts reading a dirty magazine. Kyle peeks out and the boy lifts his pants and runs out of the bathroom screaming. His magazine goes flying down the stairs. Nicole picks it up and gives him a dirty look. Nicole introduces Josh to Kyle. He asks if he’s so special, why did she put in a bathtub. She says that she wants Kyle to bunk in Josh’s room for the next little while. Nicole asks where Lori is and Josh says that she had a phone call from a teacher, Miss Plana Parenthood. Kyle senses that his presence is turning these people against each other. Lori gets in trouble for leaving Kyle by himself and is not allowed to go to Declan’s party.
Kyle meets Stephen and Stephen goes to shake his hand but Kyle doesn’t shake back. Kyle believes that this man is a superior in communicating and wonders why others choose to speak so ineffectively.
Mrs. Bloom and Amanda come to the house and she says that one of Nicole’s challenged cases broke into her house and snuck up on Amanda while she was alone. Amanda tries to defend him. Kyle is checking her out and vice versa.
At the dinner table, Lori is trying to defend herself by leaving Kyle alone for a few minutes, it’s not like she was leaving him with Michael Jackson. Kyle is thinking that there are over 800,000 words in the English language but the eyes however, speak a more precise code. Kyle is feeling thirsty and his language skills are still very primitive so he relies on what he learned at the youth detention center. “Yo, let’s get some juice down here. What’s up, everyone taking stupid pills around here. Juice me.“ These are the first words he speaks and the family is very shocked. Nicole asks if she can understand him. Josh tells him to speak and he quotes Lori’s phone conversation with Hillary where she said that she felt weird about Mike Suby putting his hand down her pants. Nicole is unsure whether she can understand him. Nicole thought that he might’ve been autistic because of his mimicry but is unsure of that now too. She says that she wants to test him.
Nicole and Stephen are talking in private and Stephen says that somebody’s gotta be missing him. Nicole tells him that he has no belly button. Stephen is confused and concerned that he will be staying there longer than expected and Nicole ensures him that social services will try to find a place for him by Monday.
Nicole, Josh and Kyle are outside walking towards the family’s car and Kyle notices a strange orange truck pulling away. Kyle is sitting at a desk taking an IQ test to fill out and he is filling it out really fast. It’s an hour long test and he completed it in five minutes and he got them all right! Nicole gets on the phone and calls Dr. Fields.
Kyle is having an MRI. The average human uses 7 % of the brain and Kyle’s MRI is showing much higher than that. The technicians believe is it a mechanical failure. Anyone who uses that much of their brain would be prone to strokes, seizures and tumours.
Back at the house, Nicole tucks Kyle into bed. She turns off the light and he glances away.
Josh is searching the internet for information on seizures. He looks shocked and then he goes to his bed next to Kyle’s. He tells Kyle that he doesn’t want him “wigging out”, if he’s going to start foaming at the mouth, go get his mom. Kyle sits up and Josh tells him that his mom hid the dirty magazine. They go to sleep.
Kyle is walking in the dark and he opens the fridge and seems surprised that it lights up. Lori sneaks by him but Kyle sees her leaving the house and chooses to follow her. He walks across the street and almost gets hit by a car.
Lori arrives at Declan’s party. Hillary gives her a beer and then Kyle arrives and watches people making out and dancing. Hillary checks out Kyle and says that he’s cute and then tells Lori that Declan has already hooked up with another girl tonight. Lori glances over and see’s Kyle shot gunning a beer. She turns away and Kyle staggers up. He thinks that he has arrived in a strange place, hell. He appears to be drunk and then the cops show up to break the party up. Kyle refers to them as a strange enemy. Lori is apprehended by an officer and Kyle walks out to stop her and he goes right through a window. Everyone is shocked because he is alright. He walks up to the cop and he tells him to back off. He hisses at the cop and moves out of the way when he tries to hand cuff him. Kyle steals the hand cuffs from him and then the cop brings out a night stick which Kyle also takes from him. The onlookers are amazed and the cop goes to reach for his gun but decides not to and everyone cheers as he walks away.
Kyle is walking down the street carrying Lori with a fog surrounding him.
Back at the house, it’s still late at night and Kyle walks into Nicole and Stephen’s room. He wakes Nicole up and says that he is leaking (from the cuts on his face). In the kitchen, Nicole cleans him up and Josh says that there is nothing broken in the house. Kyle looks around at the pictures and it reminds him that he was never little. He asks Nicole “What am I?” and she says that it’s difficult to answer but he is a boy, a special boy and a human being. He says that “you know not”, sensing her confusion as to what she is.
Lori is at Jojo’s juice bar with one of her friends and she is obviously hung-over. Her friend gives her a juice drink and says that that should help her. Lori says that one more sip and this place becomes a barfotorium. Her friend asks her about the knight in shining armour that saved her the night before. Lori doesn’t remember at first but then realizes that it was Kyle. She says that it’s the short-bus kid that is staying at their house.
Nicole is outside watering the plants when Kyle comes out and wraps his arms around her from behind and starts to kiss her neck. Nicole turns around and realizes that it is Kyle. Kyle realizes that not all forms of feelings are appropriate. He saw her and Stephen doing this earlier. She says that she was scared and Kyle asks what scared is. She explains and he says that he gets scared. He flashes back to the snake, the inmate, Amanda, the orange truck, the MRI machine, the car that would’ve hit him, the cop and than says that he gets scared of everything. Nicole says that she can’t imagine how strange and scary the world must feel to him but it will get better. Kyle asks her to help him and then calls her mom. Nicole starts to cry as she gives him a hug and promises that she will take care of him.
Stephen is in his workshop fixing a computer when Nicole comes in and says that she can’t send Kyle away. He is too vulnerable and the best facilities can’t give him enough care and attention. Stephen asks what she’ll do about her other cases. She says that there is something really special. He says that they already have their own family to care about. She says that it’s asking a lot. He says to ask Lou if there is anyone.
Nicole is at the juvenile facility talking to Lou and as she leaves, the truck from earlier is seen watching her and then the side mirror is shown with a mid-20’s man staring at her. He has a file with Kyle’s picture on it, it appears to be a booking request.
Stephen is in his shop having trouble with a computer and Kyle is playing with some wire and it falls on the ground. He sees a mouse trap and goes to touch it but Stephen tells him not too. Stephen explains that the traps kill rats because we don’t want them in the house. Stephen appears to have fixed the computer but then it starts to spark. Kyle walks over and looks at the screen and it is blue with scrolling letters and numbers on it. Kyle thinks that verbal communication is so random while this language was mathematical and made much more sense. The computer starts to spark again. Kyle walks over to the keyboard and starts punching something in very quickly and he fixes the computer. Stephen is amazed and unsure of how he did it.
Josh walks into his room and finds his dirty magazine underneath his pillow. He looks confused. He walks outside and sees Kyle playing with a basketball with his foot. Josh asks him if he found the magazine. Kyle said that he found it for him because Josh said he missed her. Josh shows him how to shoot the basketball and then tells Kyle to try and Kyle makes the basket and then the two start playing with each other.
Everyone is at the dinner table, except for Kyle, and Nicole tells them that Kyle will be staying with them for a while longer and there is no response but Kyle comes down and sits down and Josh pours him a glass of iced tea. Lori puts some vegetables on his plate and Stephen pours some potatoes and the camera pulls outside to end the episode.
