COMMANDER WILLIAM ADAMA:
(Edward James Olmos)
Commander Adama, a war hero and the commander of the Galactica, leads humanity's survivors during the ultimate fight between man and machine.
He was on the verge of retirement after years spent in the peacetime military. He is estranged from his son Lee, who blames Adama for the death of his brother Zak, and is a loner who knows well the burden of command. He is a straightforward, insightful leader who makes gut decisions and wears a simple day uniform with a minimum of insignia.
When the Cylons attacked, they wiped out virtually all humanity, leaving Adama in charge of Colonial defenses. He was eager to avenge the death of billions. With some reluctance, he wasconvinced to abandon the last colony and to transport humanity’s remnants to a distant star system, away from the murderous Cylons. It is from the helm of his outdated ship that he tries to lead the Galactica’s fugitive fleet back to their legendary, possibly nonexistent, home world known as Earth.
PRESIDENT LAURA ROSLIN
(Mary McDonnell)
Education Minister Laura Roslin takes on a tremendous responsibility when the deadly Cylon attack leaves her next in line for the presidency.
Toughly decisive when she needs to be, Laura is also a teacher with a strong intellect and moral backbone. Following a diagnosis for malignant breast cancer, she boarded a routine flight when the Cylons attacked and destroyed her home planet, leaving her president of the Twelve Colonies of Kobol.
Intent on preserving a nucleus of humanity from the near-total destruction that has already killed billions, Laura returns to Battlestar Galactica and asserts her authority, ordering Adama (much against his will) to back down from battle, to abandon the fight with the Cylons, and to find a quiet corner of the universe for humanity to rebuild itself over the course of time.
Close to death, she has lost her faith and believes she will never be able to lead the ever-shrinking remnants of humanity to safety.
DR. GAIUS BALTAR
(James Callis)
Scientific genius Gaius Baltar is one of the greatest minds humanity has to offer. Unfortunately, his abundance of intellect is counterbalanced by a complete lack of ethics. It was his moral weakness that lead to humanity's destruction.
Baltar carried on a two-year affair with a woman he believed to be a corporate spy for a private firm, granting her access to his nation’s most vital defense technology. When the Cylons launched their attack, featuring a computer virus that annihilated his programs, Baltar realized he had been engaged in an affair with a Cylon spy in humanoid form.
Baltar is plagued by guilt and shame, driven by a fierce will to live. He is the ultimate survivor with an uncanny ability (or destiny) to land on his feet, regardless of the choices he makes.
Number 6, (the Cylon who seduced him) now appears to him in uncontrollable visions, tanting him, guiding him, manipulating him.
NUMBER SIX
(Tricia Helfer)
Brilliant and devastatingly beautiful, Number Six is one of a new breed of Cylons, indistinguishable in appearance from their human creators. They have resurfaced after decades of silence to lay waste to those who created and abandoned them.
A mixture of cold intellectual or coquettish sexiness, Six seduced Dr. Gaius Baltar into revealing every aspect humanity’s defense network, to destroy their military capability in a single blow.
There have been many versions of Six, but each progressive form seems increasingly spiritual, driven by a firm belief in one god and His divine plan for humans and Cylons.
CAPTAIN LEE ADAMA (APOLLO)
(Jamie Bamber)
Call sign Apollo, Captain Lee Adama is one of the best pilots in the 12 Colonies. When the Cylons return, he set aside his anger with his father, Commander Adama, and joined the Commander and Starbuck, his flight partner and confidante, in protecting the future of humanity.
Eventually, he sheds his flight suit for his interest in law and government. Although he is sometimes at odds with President Roslin, they challenge each to make the best decisions for the sake of humanity.
In love, Apollo has been unlucky, having been in a failed marriage with Dualla and suffered the pull-me-close-get-lost antics of a confused Starbuck. Lee has always known the right thing to do. But enemies and alies are crossing lines, and now he is uncertain. It's his biggest fear.
LIEUTENANT KARA THRACE (STARBUCK)
(Katee Sackoff)
Call sign Starbuck, Kara is the fleet’s best Viper pilot. A loner, as undisciplined and rebellious out of the cockpit as she is calculating and precise in it, she may be the fleet's best pilot – and is constantly in trouble because she doesn't suffer fools.
Despite her hard-drinking, hard-fighting ways, Kara loves fiercely, if erratically. She is also cherished by the Adama’s who consider her part of their family.
Kara always believed she had a destiny. When she returns, after being presumed dead, and claiming to have found earth, no one knew who she was, or believed she had found the promised planet.
Now, with the Cylon hybrid naming her the harbinger of doom and Earth being nothing close to what was promised, her own identity and destiny are coming into question.
SHARON VALERII (BOOMER/ATHENA)
Grace Park
Galactica Sharon believed she was a human rookie raptor pilot in a relationship with Chief Petty Officer Tyrol aboard Galactica. Unsettling episodes led her to doubt her humanity. Her worst fears came true when she shot Commander Adama, in an act seemingly divorced from her will.
Caprica Sharon (Athena) was planted on Caprica in a behavioural experiment between her and the stranded Lt. Helo. The two fell in love, and by the time Helo realised her Cylon identity, she was pregnant, and wanted to defect to the human side of the battle.
Sharon is the most human and empathetic of all Cylon models, and the only first Cylon know of to conceive and bear a child (Hera, whom she believed had died, but later discovered to be living at the end of season 2).
Boomer, who remained with the Cylons, is disillusioned and angry with both her own kind humanity. Athena is genuinely bonded to Helo and their child, but she is haunted by dreams that Hera will be taken away by a Six.
COLONEL SAUL TIGH
(Michael Hogan)
Executive Officer of Battlestar Galactica. He's among the best to have at your side – even if he's tightly wound, moody and prone to outbursts of temper.
As a cuckolded husband, Tigh's turned to drink, and became a volatile man until the Cylon Attack. In positions of power, he has no patience for dissent, yet he remains Adama's oldest and most loyal friend.
As a member of the resistance on New Caprica, he is forced to kill his own wife after it is discovered she is a collaborator with the enemy. When he later discovers he is a Cylon, he is shaken to the core. It will be through his deep loyalty to Adama and sense of integrity that he will try and bridge both his identities to serve those he has sworn to protect.
CHIEF PETTY OFFICER GALEN TYROL
(Aaron Douglas)
Chief Petty Officer of Battlestar Galactica. Rugged, with the worn look of someone who has spent a lifetime working around big machines, he's the kind of man for whom his crew would do anything.
Tyrol is fiercely loyal. He is a natural leader who is very much in tune with his crew. He believes in the rule of military law and tradition, while admiring the qualities of honesty, hard work, common sense, intelligence and integrity. Despite his strong work ethic, he will give people the room to make mistakes, as he puts it, "If you don't fall down, you are not trying hard enough."
Yet when he discovers his Cylon identity and his wife Kally dies, presumbably by suicide, Tyrol is left with his son and his own insurmountable guilt.
LIEUTENANT KARL C. AGATHON (HELO)
(Tahmoh Penikett)
Helo is a Raptor pilot onboard the Battlestar Galactica, and an ideal soldier who is willing to sacrifice himself for the greater good. Helo gives up his seat back to the Battlestar during the Cylon Armageddon in order to give it to Gaius Baltar, a renowned scientist.
Left behind on Cylon-invaded Caprica, he is surprised by an unexpected saviour in Sharon who helps him excape Cylon pursuers. They fall in love while on the run, and Sharon reveals she is pregnant, just as Helo discovers she is a Cylon.
He constantly rides the line in his duty to protect the fleet and his commitment and love for Sharon and their unborn child. Helo leads with his heart.
LT. FELIX GAETA
(Alessandro Juliani)
Lieutenant Felix Gaeta is a young, capable officer in the Colonial military. Prior to the attack, he was studying biogenetics and planned to get a degree through the military.
He exhibits a strong attention to detail and is highly efficient. Through the series, we realise that Gaeta has a strong desire to do the right thing, with little interest in how it will affect his popularity.
PETTY OFFICER DUALLA
Kandyse McClure
Dualla loves the order and cameraderie of military life. As Apollo's wife, she is loyal and supportive, and this continues even when their marriage ends.
She is no-nonsense, tough and pragmatic – even when falling in love, but she also bears her losses hard.
