How to Make a Wii Cake

Friday, May 23, 2008 16:33

THINGS YOU WILL NEED:

Yellow cake recipe or store bought packages, the less moist the better
Fondant icing
Vanilla butter cream icing
Black and blue gel icing
Black food colouring
Cardboard
Dowlings x 2 (at 12 inches long)
3 square cakeboards
3 cardboard strips
2 square cake pans
1 loaf pan

BAKING:

Follow the directions to whatever recipe you decide to use but make sure to double the it!  Fill your pans in between 1/2 and 2/3 of the way full. You'll be using the cake loaf for the base of the Wii, the 1st square cake for the body and the 2nd square cake for the remote. You'll have extra left over in case there are any mishaps or for a tasty snack.

ASSEMBLY:

The Cake Stand

First we will need to create the stand.  Tape the three square cake boards together so that they are approximately 1.5 inches thick.  This will provide the support for the dowlings.  Use an exacto knife to cut small slits in the top layer of the cake boards.  You can use a simple pencil sharpener to sharpen your dowlings.  Then using the pointy end of the dowlings, push them through the rest of the cake boards so they can go clean through.  Flip the dowlings over so the blunt ends are down and push them to the bottom of the cake boards so that they stand perpendicular to the boards, pointy end up.

The Wii Base

Using the loaf cake for the base of the Wii, apply a thin layer of the vanilla butter cream icing and put it aside.  Add a small amount of black food colouring to a ball of fondant about the size of a baseball and kneed until it's an even grey.  Lightly dust a flat surface or cutting board with icing sugar and roll out the fondant to a size that will cover all the visible sides of the loaf cake.  Place it on the loaf, smooth out the edges and trim the excess off.  Place the cake on the prepared cake stand by pushing it onto the dowlings.  Try to keep them in the middle.

The Wii Body

Cut the square cake into 4 even pieces.  Measure out the three pieces of cardboard to fit the length of each piece of the square cake. You also need to measure where the dowlings are and pierce corresponding holes in each.

Take the bottom piece of the cake and slide it down the dowlings to sit on the base of the Wii.  Make sure you keep the dowlings as centred as possible. Apply a layer of butter cream icing on top of the cake then slide a piece of cardboard on top. Follow that with the second layer of cake, more icing and the next piece of cardboard.  Continue this step till the top of the square cake is skewered.  Try to keep the edges lined up so you have a nice, smooth Wii.  If the stakes are too long, you can trim them quite easily with an animal nail trimmer, and I suggest buying one specifically for this purpose.

Carve the cake to the Wii shape and try to smooth out the edges.  Apply a layer of butter cream icing on all sides of the body of the Wii.

Roll out the pure white fondant to a large enough size to fit the Wii.  This is tricky so I suggest cutting pieces for each side, trimming the excess and molding it to fit.

To make the buttons for the front, use a knife to carve out rectangles in the extra fondant which you can stick to the body with butter cream icing.  Use the blue and black gel to decorate the buttons and disc entrance.

The Wii Remote

Using a piece of leftover cake from the second square pan, apply some butter cream icing and cover it in white fondant, easily hiding the seams on the bottom of the controller. Cut out the buttons from the thin layer of fondant and attach them with more butter cream icing. Decorate them with the coloured gels.

See? Easy as pie.I mean cake!
