I'm one who's pretty picky when it comes to the sci-fi I like to watch.
I like my genre entertainment to be both intellectual and engaging.
Anything that gets my heart beating double-time due to serious tension and suspense has got my vote...hands down!
Well thank the great Goddesses that Torchwood Season 2 did just that.
While all the other big kids were outside on patios; or shopping at the hippest clothing sample sales or just partying because the sun was shining and the weather was sweet this past weekend- yours truly spent the weekend indoors cramming for my interview with Torchwood star, John Barrowman. Pity me not Space-cadets as this cram session consisted of all 13 episodes of season 2, as well as season 1 of Doctor Who in its'
entirety. Thanks for loaning me the D.W. DVD's Mark Askwith.
Now it's not the research that's stressful, it's deciding what to wear that makes me a little nutty. Come on now! It's John Barrowman that I'm interviewing. I want to look my best!
Well, all my fashion fussing and DVD watching was well worth a missed sunny weekend. It seemed like mother-nature rewarded my studies with a perfect day of warmth and sunshine as I arrived at Metro Hall park for my one-on-one with John.
As suave, dashing, enigmatic, charming and matinee handsome as he is on TV; he is even more so in person. Yeah, let's say it wasn't one of my most difficult interviews to do.
Now, I love both Doctor Who and Torchwood but I admitted to John that I prefer his portrayal of Captain Jack Harkness in Torchwood rather than Doctor Who. The character just seems to be more refined and developed. Mind you he's still as saucy and sexy as he is in Doctor Who but with a little extra confidence and punch in Torchwood.
Since SPACE won't be airing any of the first season of Torchwood or any of Doctor Who episodes, I naturally had to ask John to give a little background on the show - who the members of the agency are, their very 'interesting' interaction with one another and how he feels playing the role of Captain Jack Harkness. Jack is probably the first omnisexual male lead to ever be played on television.
We talked about Jack and what makes him tick. I found out that John feels the character of "Jack fits him like a glove and was actually tailored made for him."
It was at this stage of the interview, that something occurred that has never quite happened to me before. Having consumed his second coffee of the morning, John burped indirect at me! Now he did try to direct the gas away from me but the situation itself had us both laughing hysterically! I've never had such a serious case of the giggles that I couldn't contain myself. In my attempt to ask my next question to John, he again burst into laughter, at his embarrassing gassy moment which caused me to giggle again. He even said 'if he was with his mates, he would've blown the burp directly at them!' Again, I burst out into laughter till tears steeped from my eyes. I took this natural body function as a sign that John was quite comfortable, and at ease with me.
This was quite evident throughout the our interview with the amount of times John kept touching my knee.
Now, before you draw any conclusions the hand on the knee was fine by me, as John is an openly gay male. It was the fact that I had put on a bit too much lotion that morning and noticed that John's hand kept sticking to my knee. Oh, the little things that happen during an interview.
Once we both regained our composure, I asked what kind of a ride fellow 'Woodies' can expect to go on in season 2.
The response from John had both of us laughing out loud yet again! He loved the fact that I used the term 'Woodies', a nickname John created to called fans of Torchwood.
It was at this point that the rest of the interview had few double-ententres. And it all started with the 'Woodies.'
Having a love of fashion as well as sci-fi, I commented on the fashion style of Jack - namely the 'awful suspenders and belt!'
John corrected me - saying the correct phrase was 'britches and belt' a style popular in the late 1800's. Creator Russell T. Davies wanted to give Jack a defined look. Well obviously the look works for Captain Jack in the show, with the many love interests he seems to attract.
It would seem John and I also share a common and passionate interest of toys and high-end collectibles. John said 'he really only took the role of Jack to become an action figure' and has every play set and character that has been created from Doctor Who and Torchwood. He also loves the fact that he can now hold all 8-inches of himself!
After a wonderful hour of conversation and chuckles, we concluded with the fact that Season 2 of Torchwood is sure to keep fans...I mean fellow Woodies... gripped to their seats!
Space is airing two back-to-back second season episodes of Torchwood, starting August 8 at 9 p.m. ET. It will be running regularly on Space at 10 p.m. ET on Fridays starting at August 15.
