The Lowdown on Comicon Day 1

MARK ASKWITH REPORTS

I fully intended to write several posts today, but the madness that is Comicon  seems to expand to fill all available time. So far the big buzz at this convention seems to be the Watchmen movie, and the lifesize Owlship on the convention floor.

The day began with meeting our freelance cameraman, and then Natasha, and Our New Host did throws for the show. After that we did a couple of interviews with writers and artists who work in the Star Wars Universe, interviewed the lovely Erin Grey from Buck Rogers, Watchmen artist and co-creator Dave Gibbons, and we attended some intense media scrums. The first scrum was for a movie called Knowing, directed by Alex Proyas. The second was for Push, the third was for a comedy called Sex Drive.

The highlight, and I know I burying the lead here, was for Twilight. Unless you've been living under a rock you know about this very popular Vampire/Romance book series. We've featured the author Stephenie Meyer on the blog and on air, and from the feedback I know this book series has legions of dedicated fans.

We interviewed 5 Twilight cast members - Stephenie, the director, and the rest of the team seemed overwhelmed. Robert Patterson who got the difficult role of heart-throb Edward Cullen put it best. 'The fans went crazy. It was so intense. I've never felt anything like it'. and this is from an actor who has been part of the Harry Potter film experience!

We also interviewed the executive producers who are translating author Terry Goodkind's 'Wizards First Rule' to TV. The brain trust is impressive- Sam Raimi and Rob Tappert- and Terry Goodkind seems to be actively involved. The first surprise is that the TV series will be called 'Legend of the Seeker', and it will debut on November 1. In anticipation of the your questions - I have no idea if SPACE will get it.

The highlight of the day for me was when Natasha asked Terry Goodkind what fantasy could do that regular fiction couldn't, and he pointed out her ornate tattoo as an example of the power of fantasy. Awesome!

After a grueling day we went to a local restaurant, and planned the evening. We covered the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund party, and later tonight we plan to attend the Diamond party. Well, maybe not 'we'. your humble correspondent is mighty knackered.
