So I've been all over the place with the Toronto Film Festival® and Midnight Madness screenings. Thought I'd spit out some quick thoughts on the films I've seen so far.
Detroit Metal City: Like watching Manga on the big screen. Big visuals, big gags and it's nice to see a Japanese Genre film that isn't a kung-fu or horror flick.
Not Quite Hollywood: A fun documentary about Aussie film industry and how the exploitation films of the 70's and 80's affected it. It could have been a rather dry topic were it not a well directed film with lots of great visuals and witty observations from its celebrity commentators like Quentin Tarantino.
Chocolate: Whoa! This is the right choice to close Midnight Madness for sure. Ammara Siripong is amazing as Zin the lead. The action is relentless and I actually cared about the story, too. It even has some good laughs.
Krabat: German fantasy film. Think Harry Potter meets Dragon Slayer. Just subtract the Dragons and the 'pleasantness' of Harry Potter. I liken it to a Brother's Grimm fairy tale. If it were a fairy tale, it would likely have been one of my favourites in youth.
Zak & Miri Make A Porno: Wow. You wouldn't expect such a touching movie to have 'Porno' in the title but I'd have to say it's my favorite Kevin Smith film to date. Go see it, just don't bring grandma. That is unless your grandma doesn't mind scatological humor and full frontal male nudity. I'm taking mine tomorrow.
Deadgirl: Hmmm. I can see this one having some huge cult success. I love the premise but had a bit of trouble suspending disbelief not due to the 'fantasy' element but due to the character choices. A fair amount of blood and gore for those who're into that sort of thing. It lacks the campy feel of some teen horror romps so that was refreshing.
Those are all the films I've seen so far. It's kept me pretty busy and it's only Monday! Now I've just got to find time to give SPORE a spin.
That's all!
