Eyes Over Italy

ALOS Image

This is an image of the Gulf of Naples as seen by the ALOS (Advanced Land Observing Satellite). The shot was taken on April 28 using the satellite's Advanced Visible and Near Infrared Radiometer II. Fairly identifiable objects include the wakes of watercraft in the gulf, several land spits and marinas protruding along the coast of Naples, and the shadows of clouds cast upon the land. Above right are the runways of Aeroporto Capodichino. The ALOS was developed as a full spectrum Earth observing satellite, using various instruments to measure land elevation, land surface features, and night-and-day all-weather observations.
