A Mari Usque Ad Mare

A Sea on the Moon

Tuesday, May 30, 2006 16:24

These images were snapped by the European Space Agency's SMART-1 spacecraft, using its Advanced Moon Imaging Experiment camera. The shot above shows an example of lunar highlands, and the one below shows a 'mare' region that sits near to the highland. A mare, or sea, on the moon is mainly a flat space of land with few craters, and many patches of various shades of grey. The highlands are pock-marked with many craters and rough landscapes. The first image was taken from an altitude of 1112 kilometres; the second from an altitude of 1990 kilometres.
