Hubble Blind In One Eye

Telescope's Main Camera Has Stopped Working

Tuesday, June 20, 2006 16:22

The main camera aboard the Hubble Space Telescope that revolutionized astronomy with its stunning pictures, stopped working on June 24th, 2006.  Engineers are still trying to figure out what happened and how to repair it.  The Advanced Camera for Surveys, a third-generation instrument went offline on June 19th, 2006.  Engineers are hopeful that the problem can be fixed and that a bad transistor could be causing the trouble.  Another suspicion is that some of the camera's memory was disturbed by a cosmic event.  Both possibilities are things that can be resolved back on Earth.  The lost of the camera has not shut down the telescope entirely.  Hubble launched in April 1990, needs new batteries and gyroscopes if it is to keep working beyond 2007.
