Discovery Docks With I.S.S.

STS-121 And Expedition 13 Join Forces

Thursday, July 06, 2006 16:27

At 10:52 a.m. EDT Thursday, Shuttle Discovery docked with the International Space Station. An hour before docking, shuttle commander Steve Lindsay manually steered the shuttle's nose up and slowly flipped the shuttle so that the belly could be photographed for any signs of damage.  This would be the second time the shuttle has made such an unusual maneuver before docking with the station.  The crew of STS-121 delivered much needed supplies and equipment as well as the newest crew member of Expedition 13.  This will bring the crew members of the I.S.S. up to three for the first time in three years.  The 12 day mission will see astronauts Piers Sellers and Michael Fossum carry out two space-walks with a possible third, which would extend the mission by a day.
