The Glowing Eye

Cloud of gas ejected by a star forms an eerie shape.

The above image was prepared by the Hubble Heritage team. The colors represent different gas temperatures; blue represents the hottest glowing gas while orange represents the cooler gas.

At the center of planetary nebula NGC 6751 is a hot star that ejected gas several thousand years ago. The gas is in streams that project outwards from the central star. The distorted shape of the streams that make up the eye are due to stellar winds and radiation.
