A sun-like star's last hurrah

Hubble captures the demise of a sun-like star.

Wednesday, March 14, 2007 9:55

A star that's very much like our own sun ended its life by ejecting its outer layers of gas. The star shed its mass multiple times and in different directions, which is why a bow shape surrounds the remaining white dwarf. The result is called a planetary nebula.

The image was taken by Hubble's Wide Field Planetary Camera 2. The white dwarf is represented the white dot in the center. Helium is represented by blue, oxygen is blue-green, while nitrogen and hydrogen are red.
