The Sun in 3-D

The first 3-D images of our sun by STEREO.

NASA's Solar TErrestrial RElations Observatory (STEREO) satellites have provided the first three-dimensional images of the sun. The videos and photos at the NASA website can be properly viewed with 3-D glasses.

3-D data is used to improve computer models that display the magnetic fields and active regions around the Sun. These models will ultimately lead to predictions of when solar eruptions occur.

Above is an image with all of STEREO's wavelengths combined into one picture. One can see the highly active regions on the sun, such as in the center.
