The shattered remains of a supernova.

New images by the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope reveal sections of the Veil Nebula, one of the most spectacular supernova remnants in our sky.

Scientists estimate that the supernova explosion occurred some 5-10,000 years ago. The event may have been witnessed and recorded by ancient civilizations - they would have seen a star increase in brightness to roughly the amount of a crescent Moon.

Studying supernovae is important for understanding the origins of life. These explosions are responsible for making all chemical elements that are heavier than iron.  Chemicals that make grass green and blood red are built from these remnants of ancient stars.
