Mars Rovers back in action

After weeks of braving dust storms.

After weeks of braving dust storms, both of NASA's Mars Rovers are back in action and taking commands. Just yesterday, rover "Opportunity" entered Victoria Crater, dipping into the crater's slope and then back out. The result is pictured above.

The driving commands included a precaution for the rover to stop driving if the wheels were slipping more than 40 percent. When slippage exceeded that amount, Opportunity stopped with its front pair of wheels still inside the crater. The rover team pans to assess results of the drive, then start Opportunity on an extended exploration inside the crater.
